The OneIT Communication and Collaboration Team’s Office 365 sub-project is complete as of June 2016, with all academic units now using the cloud-based service. In all, 54,000 faculty, staff, and student accounts were migrated from the on-premises email system to Office 365, which provides a modern user experience and improved reliability, security, and access.
The Office 365 system offers 50 times larger email storage capacity and one terabyte of cloud file storage through OneDrive so users can access files from anywhere, sync across all devices, and share files and folders with co-workers.
In preparation for the final wave of migrations, the team partnered with Healthcare Information Systems (HCIS) to ensure that Office 365 and hospital email system users can find each other in the contact list and receive email through distribution lists. Retiree email was also moved to Office 365.
Next steps include efforts to decommission supporting on-premises email systems such as anti-spam and email routing. This will reduce server footprints in UI data centers and improve service efficiency. IT staff also continue to create service enhancements such standardized email address formats and automatic email account provisioning for all students, faculty and staff.
