The OneIT Website Hosting Project initially focused on consolidating the number of Drupal instances across campus into a central service entity, but the team expanded its project scope after discovering that more savings could be had by moving web-hosting services to a cloud provider, Acquia. The move also reduces hardware and software maintenance costs and enhances traffic-management and security.
To date, three of the six major campus units using the Drupal Content Management System (CMS) have successfully moved at least one site to the cloud to validate new processes and tools. The team is working to help remaining units plan for and execute their own migrations, and expects to complete moving approximately 650 websites to the cloud provider by September 2016.
Adoption of Drupal continues to increase at the UI; the Colleges of Business, Engineering, and Education and the healthcare enterprise are in the process of moving to the system now used by nearly all of campus.
