The OneIT HR Process Project achieved closeout at the May 24 Operations Team meeting as the team reported out on completion of the skills inventory sub-project. Nearly 500 OneIT staff completed the skills inventory, which provided a more accurate, complete view of the skills and technical interests of IT professionals at UI.

OneIT Leaders also completed surveys to forecast which skills will be increasingly needed in the coming years, and the gaps between existing and needed skills will inform a workforce development strategy. Findings will be used to guide training and development, succession management, and recruitment, and to prompt discussion between employees and their supervisors around skills, interests, and goals. 

Participation in the inventory was high. A pilot survey distributed to 76 campus systems administrators yielded an 86% participation rate, and the broader survey sent to 568 IT professionals had an 83% rate.

The BISSC (Business Intelligence Shared Service Center) created a Supervisor Competencies and Interest Summary dashboard to facilitate career development discussion and planning between IT staff and their immediate supervisors. It was available for performance reviews to coincide with goal planning. BISSC also developed a Skills Survey Strategic dashboard for analysis of aggregate results, and drilldown capabilities for individual skills and interests. Specific reports have been generated upon request.

A project team from the MOR IT Leadership Program cohort performed data analysis on the skills inventory data and shared high-level analysis on correlation between skills and interests. They will be presenting and discussing their recommendations for action to the OneIT operations team. 

Future steps include further analysis of survey results, incorporating findings into OneIT project roadmaps, reporting outcomes, exploring training and development opportunities based on future skills needs, and possibly refreshing the survey in the future and including healthcare IT if there is interest.
